This information has been gathered via email, fb pages, contact form and blog articles. Blog sources as below. We are still awaiting some replies. If you have anything to add, do let us know.

3M

Thank you for contacting 3M.

ACADEMY ACRYLIC PAINTS

www.grumbacherart.com (possibly not available in the UK)
A representative noted that several colours in the Academy Acrylic line use “bone black” (bone char) in their formulas. The representative very helpfully provided a technical specification sheet for the Academy Acrylics, showing which colours have bone black in their formulas. The representative stated that they are not currently testing ingredients or products on animals. the Grumbacher representative noted that animal testing on the individual ingredients may have been required in the past. – Chartpack, Inc, Education Department via email

ACMINET

www.acminet.org (contacted re: toxicological testing and the ACMI certification process for art and craft supplies)
Some manufacturer websites indicate their products have a certification seal from The Art and Creative Materials Institute (ACMI). You can also find these seals on the products themselves.
“ACMI-certified product seals (AP Non-Toxic and CL Cautionary Labelling) indicate that these products have been evaluated by a qualified toxicologist and are labelled in accordance with federal and state laws. Each product in the program undergoes extensive toxicological testing that covers both acute and chronic toxicity concerns before it is granted the right to bear the ACMI certification seal.”
There are many alternatives to animal-testing. However, a representative from ACMI noted via email that “there may be instances where there aren’t other reliable test methods available.” Keep in mind that once a product has been evaluated and certified, there is no need to keep testing. Unless laws change, or new information surfaces about health risks. What’s “cruelty-free” today, may not have been decades ago, and may not be tomorrow. Due to the nature of federal laws for public safety, and the slow adoption of alternatives to animal-testing for many decades, it may not be possible to find a chemical/pigmented product in the U.S. that was never tested on animals, either as a finished product, or during evaluation of component ingredients. I choose not to hold today’s companies accountable for those possible past sins if they express a position against animal testing today.

ACRYLICOS VALLEJO

Alex Vallejo from Acrylicos Vallejo said that they had a company policy to avoid using animal ingredients when possible, but they do have a couple items in their Fine Arts and Acrylic Artists Colour ranges that use shellac and bone char due to the lack of synthetic substitutes. Fortunately, their model paints were free from squished bugs and burnt cow bones.
Alex also pointed out their policy on REACH, the EU regulation that is requiring every chemical to undergo safety tests. Valajeo has consulted with their major chemical suppliers and with only a few very rare exceptions, all the REACH tests on the ingredients they buy are done on dead tissue only.

KOLORBOND

Hello Sarah,
None of our paints contain animal  or insect products. Nor am I aware of our paints, or their ingredients, being tested on animals, although our solvent based paints contain chemicals which, when is their liquid form, are dangerous to animals and will, no doubt, have been tested on animals by the chemical manufacturers at some time in the past. This will be the case for all solvent based paints.
To our knowledge, our water based paint, and its ingredients, have not been tested on animals.
Please let me know if you require any further information.

SUGRU

Our R and D boffins have reviewed every ingredient in Sugru and based on the information available to us, there are no animal derived materials used.

Animal testing has never been used or commissioned by us to test Sugru. We have also never commissioned such tests on raw materials either.
However, as a small company, we don't have control over testing of raw materials by all of our suppliers and their suppliers. In some cases, for the safety of consumers, they may have been required in the past to have animal testing as part of their suite of health and safety procedures.

We would like to reassure you that we always endeavour to work with the most trustworthy and reputable suppliers and that ethics in business are something we take very seriously. Nobody can predict what the future will hold but we are certainly grateful that we have never needed animal testing and we plan to keep it that way in the future.
